CPC statement on Russia’s recognition of the “independence” of Donetsk and Luhansk

The latest developments around Eastern Europe centred on Ukraine are unfortunately leading to a further escalation of tension and the possibility of a generalised conflict. The decision to recognise the “independence” of the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, announced in yesterday’s speech by the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, and the transfer of Russian military forces constitutes a violation of international law. This development does not under any circumstances give the US and NATO, which are constantly violating international law, the right to invoke it at will.
